AUTOGRAPH LETTER OF ÉDOUARD DETAILLE, opinion on the acquisition of a portrait of Bernadotte by a museum, October 12, 1897. 18999-7
"My dear General,
I have seen Mathias's gouache: this portrait of Bernadotte seems quite interesting to me and I believe it would be a good acquisition for the museum: only the price is somewhat off-putting to me! Mr. Mathias mentions 200 francs: that seems expensive to me: it's a price for a wealthy amateur, not a museum price.
I was very sorry to have missed your visit: but I am often working in the countryside at the moment, and I take advantage of every ray of sunshine before retiring to the studio.
Warm regards to you.
Signed: Edouard Detaille.
October 12, 97."
