Paris Commune 1871. LETTER TO THE COMMANDER OF THE 176th BATTALION ANNOUNCING THE RESIGNATION OF THE MUSICIANS OF THIS BATTALION, signed H. Goujon, April 23, 1871. 18901-5
Letter dated Paris, April 23, 1871, signed by H. Goujon, mentioning at the end of the writing, "The musicians of the 176th Battalion have all given me their resignation, no musician possesses a weapon."
The musicians of this battalion resign for the reason that they "found themselves too insulted at the Redoute to the point of being threatened to be hit... On Friday at 8:30 we were ordered to be ready by 11 o'clock and at 3:30 we were still there waiting for the companies at the Porte d'Italie, without having had breakfast and not receiving any food... On the other hand, on Wednesday and Thursday the music of the 102nd Battalion would perform all the funerals of all the battalions, there were 4 battalions where we were supposed to have our share.
They were appointed by the mayor and the commander of the 13th communal musical legion, they even went as far as using our men, so we have nothing but insults to endure, which is why I ask you to accept my resignation since we are no longer good for anything, however, if the 176th Battalion needed us, I would make every effort for the members to return the men due to the Guards of the Battalion but under your orders.
Yours faithfully. Signed: H. Goujon".
