OFFICER'S HELMET AND CUIRASS OF CUIRASSIERS, model 1872 modified 1874, Third Republic. 30056
HELMET.
Comprising a skull, a visor, a neck guard, a headband, two chin scales, a crest, a mane made of black horsehair approximately 60 cm in length, a tuft adorned with scarlet horsehair, a plume holder, and an inner lining.
All fittings are gilded brass with a matte and burnished mercury finish.
Skull, made of a single pressed metal piece in silver, stamped "de Clerval."
Visor in silver metal inclined at 53 degrees below a horizontal plane passing through the junction of the visor and skull. Edged with a 5.5 mm wide gilded brass circle placed over its edges and secured at the ends by a rivet. Underside of the visor covered in green waxed leather. Visor width is 5.5 cm.
Neck guard in silver metal consisting of a circular band on its flat side, welded under the posterior edge of the extending band, with three brass nails with domed heads riveted inside; and a second concave band forming a groove with rounded corners, soldered inside the lower part of the first band. Like the visor, the neck guard is edged with a gilded brass bezel placed over it. It is lined with black waxed leather.
Headband, gilded brass, stamped with a flaming grenade surrounded by laurel leaves, is attached to the skull. Its base rests on the visor, and its ends are riveted to the skull in the part hidden by the chin scale rosette. Front headband height is 6.5 cm.
Each chin scale is made up of 10 embossed copper ornamental leaves, gradually decreasing in width (maximum width 4.2 cm, minimum width 2 cm). These scales are attached with flattened wire staples on a leather core lined with black velvet.
At the other end, fastened to a black varnished calf leather chin strap.
Round rosette stamped with laurel leaves and fastened to the skull with a screw, rosette diameter 51 cm.
Gilded brass crest composed of two fins, a mask, and a covering.
The fins, placed vertically 3.2 cm apart in the front and 2.5 cm apart at the back, have a convex curvilinear triangle shape at the top, connecting to the skull with a concave base forming a scalloped edge.
This edge is attached to the skull with 4 round-headed copper screws stopped inside the helmet by square copper nuts.
The fins are adorned with palmettes and a bordering line at their upper edge; the edge is adorned with water leaves, all embossed in relief.
A tin plated strip connects the upper edges of the fins, fixing their spacing.
The mask serves as the anterior junction of the two fins through a solder and is embossed with a relief head of Medusa. The covering, also embossed, represents the continuation of the Medusa head's hair with intertwined serpents.
Crest ornament composed of a 2.4 cm high socket, 4.6 cm diameter, embossed with relief water leaves, and a 2.5 cm high, 1.9 cm diameter lens formed by two embossed shells. Attached to the front of the crest and supporting a tuft of scarlet horsehair (height 4.6 cm).
Black dyed horsehair mane, approximately 90 cm long, mounted on a strong nourished cow leather sole, in which the hairs are assembled with tinned brass wires with a piece of basanite glued with strong glue at the bottom; the void remaining between the two rows of hairs is filled with a braid that starts from the top and follows the crest curve to its junction with the skull.
Plume holder engraved copper with acanthus leaves, height 3.7 cm, forming a square section socket, fixed obliquely.
Interior leather lining cut into eight lobe shapes.
Very good condition, posterior mane.
CUIRASS.
Model adopted on March 31, 1855. All brass parts are gilded. Light cuirass in chromed steel. The breastplate and backplate are adorned with six rivets. Each of the two shoulder pieces has a black cow leather body, adorned with two brass chains; the body is finished with a molded rectangular buttonhole plate with textured foliage with a leather heart-shaped tip; the shoulder strap holder is made of brass with three rivets, and the chain plate covers are topped by a lion's muzzle.
