OFFICER'S SABER OF THE FOOT GRENADIERS OF THE IMPERIAL GUARD, First Empire, 1804-1814. 27646
Gilt bronze hilt, with a single-branch guard "à la chasseur" sculpted with laurel and acanthus leaves. Pommel in the shape of a pillow engraved with oak leaves, on which is riveted a profile of Emperor Napoleon crowned with silver laurel leaves. Cap with a long tail decorated in relief with laurel leaves. Wooden handle entirely filigreed in brass.
Curved blade with hollow grooves, blue and gold engraved, covering two-thirds of the blade. On the obverse side, near the ricasso, a rectangular cartouche depicts a trophy of weapons, cannons, flags, drums, signed "IS & C." Above, there are corollas of foliage and a large cartouche about 20.5 cm long with the inscription "GRENADIER À PIEP" (sic). This decoration ends with a trophy representing the crowned imperial eagle resting on a laurel and oak leaf crown around an "N" on a caisson.
Same decoration on the reverse side, but with a central cartouche bearing the inscription "GARDE IMPERIALE."
Blade back rounded.
Blade length 75 cm. Bright scarlet cloth cravat.
Black varnished leather scabbard with two brass fittings. Brass fittings decorated with lines, scalloped edges, and a chape with a button for portability on the belt.

Good condition, period blade with a spelling mistake in the word PIED "PIEP" as sometimes encountered with Klingenthal (or "PIEDS"), posthumously recolored.
