OFFICER'S SABER OF STAFF OR GENERAL OFFICER, Revolution. 32708

Gilded bronze hilt with la Marengo style. Crossguard with double inverted quillons ending in heads of mythological monsters, the downward curved part forming a quillon and the upward curved branch holding a chain connected to the pommel. Round-shaped ears cast in relief and finely chiseled with the winged and sparkling spindle of Jupiter. Cap with a long tail and a pommel shaped like a plumed helmet representing a lion's head surmounted by a starry bomb, a crest in the form of a bird's head, all topped with an abundant plume. Grip in wood covered in black waxed calfskin, filigree of copper and a ribbon of gilded brass. Curved blade with hollow facets, length 82.6 cm, width at the base 4 cm, engraved and gilded on its first third with military trophies, floral decorations and on the front face a Turk's head, all on a blued background. Scarlet cloth knot. Black varnished leather scabbard with three gilt brass fittings decorated with lines, scalloped edges, gilt brass rings and knobs.

Good condition, blade retaining its colors, leather of the scabbard with usual wear, worn gilding of the drag.

An identical saber was part of Gaston Lavalley's collection, featured on plate XIV of his work L'ARME BLANCHE SOUS LA RÉVOLUTION Étude Historique; L. Jouan, publisher, Caen 1912; reprinted in the work LES SABRES PORTÉS PAR L'ARMÉE FRANÇAISE by Jean Lhoste and Patrick Resek, éditions du Portail 2001, page 110.
Two very similar examples are known.
The first is the honorary saber awarded to General Hatry by the Executive Directory in the Year V, part of the collections of the Musée de l'Armée Hôtel des Invalides in Paris (Donated by the Hatry family) inventory J395/1 Cc37 - 502 (A12678). Featured in the book "Les Armées Françaises à l'Époque Révolutionnaire 1789-1804", page 41.
The second example was manufactured by the silversmith FAC (Antoine Furcy Courant) founder and supplier, 26 rue de la lanterne, Inscription 1798, sold at Maître Osenat on December 5, 2010, Expert Jean-Claude Dey, reproduced on page 279 of the catalog.
