SHAKO OF THE 23rd LIGHT INFANTRY REGIMENT, model 1806, First Empire. 33699
The shako body is made of a 18 cm tall felt, corresponding to the dimension set by the decree of February 25, 1806, reinforced by two leather chevrons sewn in a V shape on each side of the barrel (each chevron width 1.5 cm). Crown made of very strong waxed cow leather, Ø 22.7 cm, folded over the felt to a height of 3 cm. At the bottom of the felt, a leather chinstrap of 2 cm in width is sewn. At the back, an iron buckle with its prong. Below this buckle, a slit in calf leather, to facilitate the movement of the chinstrap. Leather visor attached to the front of the shako, made of strong varnished cow leather, 6.5 cm width below and 7 cm width above.
Plaque (or shield) affixed to the front, diamond-shaped (H 12 cm, width 11.5 cm) embossed in relief tin featuring a crowned imperial eagle clutching a hunting horn with lightning bolts, with the number "23" embossed in relief at the center and the initial "N" below the horn. Raised framing moldings with decorative embossed ribbon.
Cockade placed above the plaque, painted leather, secured to the felt by a brass point on each side. Tricolor cockade, Ø 6.5 cm (outer circle white, then red and blue in the center). Beneath the cockade, a loop intended for the pompom, attached by stitches on the felt.
This shako is one of the earliest productions in the French army and does not have chinstraps as stated in the regulations. On each side of the shako, an iron hook allows attaching the aurore wool cord.
Interior lining consists of a 4 cm high black varnished leather headband topped with a cream canvas hat of about 7 cm high.
