SUPERIOR NAVAL OFFICER'S SWORD, model 1872, Third Republic.
Gilt brass hilt. Guard with two branches forming a shell at the front, decorated and pierced with a naval anchor on a background of reeds and oak leaves. Pommel with a long tail decorated with floral motifs. Horn handle. Gilt brass ferrule. Slightly curved white blade with grooves and hollow sides, curved back edge, back with a ridge, length 70.5 cm, blade signed "Coulaux & Klingenthal". Scarlet cloth sword knot. Black varnished leather scabbard with three richly decorated gilt brass fittings of naval anchors and foliage. The chape has a belt ring and a scallop shell button for wearing on the belt. The central fitting has a belt ring.
