NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICER'S HELMET OF THE CUIRASSIERS, model 1872 modified 1874, Third Republic.
Helmet entirely made of nickel-plated steel. It consists of:
- Dome, made of polished and stamped steel sheet, pierced at the top with four suction cup holes.
- Visor (width 5 cm) and neck guard edged with an 8 mm wide brass rim placed astride its edges. The underside of the visor is lined with waxed green leather and the underside of the neck guard is lined with black waxed leather.
- Dome made of a single stamped piece with the inscription "A. GODILLOT" and marked "59" for its size.
- Neck guard composed of a circular band on its flat surface, welded under the rear edge of the band it extends, with three brass half-spherical head rivets on the inside; a second concave band forming a groove, with rounded corners and welded inside, at the bottom of the first, bordered by a copper setting placed across.
- Band, made of brass, stamped with a flaming grenade, surrounded by laurel leaves, adhering to the dome. Its base rests on the visor and its ends are riveted to the dome in the part concealed by the rosace of the chinstrap.
- Each chinstrap is composed of 15 copper scales cut alternately in three or two festoons decreasing in width, fastened with flat wire pins on a leather core lined with black sheepskin. The right chinstrap is adorned at its end with a small copper plate riveted to which a buckle also in copper is attached. At the end of the left chinstrap there is a similar plate holding a copper D loop with a strap.
- The top scale of each chinstrap is covered with a circular copper rosette (diameter 4.3 cm) representing four raised ridges.
- The dome is topped with a copper crest consisting of two flaps, a mask, and a covering.
- Flaps decorated with palmettes and a line at their upper edge; the rim is decorated with water leaves, all stamped in relief.
- A tinned sheet metal plate joins the upper edges of the flaps fixing their separation.
- The mask serving as the front junction between the two flaps by means of a weld, is stamped with a relief head of Medusa. The covering, also stamped, depicts the continuation of Medusa's hair with intertwined snakes.
- Black horsehair mane approximately 85 cm long.
- Stamped copper plume holder, 3.5 cm in height, forming a socket, fixed obliquely, from bottom to top, to the dome, slightly forward of the left chinstrap, by means of two threaded rods passing through the dome.
- Crest adorned with a socket and a lens formed by two shells stamped with flowers and palmettes. Attached to the front of the crest and supporting a scarlet pom-pom of tufts of hair.
- Interior lining in black varnished leather cut into 7 wolf teeth (one torn).
