COURT SWORD IN MARCASITE STEEL, reign of Louis XVI, Ancient Monarchy, circa 1780-1785.
Mounting entirely in high-quality marcasite steel, richly decorated in relief with foliage motifs and military trophies, and pierced. Single-branch guard, oval-shaped pommel. Plain ferrules as used on English swords (not braided). Wooden grip entirely filigreed in silver. Hilt with clamshell guard decorated in relief with foliage and weapons trophies. Triangular blade, engraved, blued and gilt on the first third, length 80.5 cm.
Scabbard in wood covered with green shagreen (stingray skin), with three steel fittings, and a reinforcing ring at the bottom due to a repair.

Very good condition, grip replaced at a later date but in the period, blade re-colored during the July Monarchy.
