NICKEL-PLATED LEATHER OFFICER'S HELMET, model 1872 modified 1874, Third Republic.
Helmet entirely made of nickel-plated steel. It consists of:
Shell, made of cast and stamped steel, pierced at the top with four ventilation holes.
Visor (width 5 cm) and neck guard edged with an 8 mm wide brass wire placed on top of its edges. Underside of visor covered in green waxed leather and underside of neck guard lined with ochre leather.
One-piece stamped shell.
Neck guard composed of a circular band on its flat surface, welded under the rear edge of the band it extends, featuring three brass golden nails with half-spherical heads riveted inside; a second concave band forming a groove with rounded angles and welded inside, below the first band, edged with a copper trim placed on top.
Headband, in brass, stamped with a flaming grenade surrounded by laurel leaves, attached to the shell. Its base rests on the visor and its ends are riveted to the shell in the area hidden by the rosette of the chinstrap.
Each chinstrap is made up of 15 copper scales alternately cut in groups of three or two scallops decreasing in width, fastened with flattened wire staples on a leather core lined with black sheepskin. The right chinstrap is adorned at its end with a small copper plate to which a copper buckle is attached. At the end of the left chinstrap, there is a similar plate with a copper D attachment, missing the strap.
The top scale of each chinstrap is covered with a circular copper rosette, 4.3 cm in diameter, featuring four raised brass wires.
The shell is surmounted by a copper crest composed of two finials, a mask, and a covering.
The finials are adorned with palmettes and a border at their upper edge; the rim is decorated with water leaves, all embossed in relief.
A tinplate connects the upper edges of the finials, fixing their spacing.
The mask, serving as the anterior junction of the two finials through a solder joint, is embossed with a relief head of Medusa. The covering, also embossed, represents the continuation of the Medusa head's hair with intertwined snakes.
Black horsehair mane about 95 cm long, retaining its original length.
Embossed copper plume holder, 3.5 cm high, forming a socket, fixed obliquely from bottom to top on the shell, slightly in front of the left chinstrap, using two threaded rods passing through the shell.
Crest decorated with a socket and a lens formed by two stamped shells of flowers and palmettes. Attached to the front of the crest and supporting a scarlet pom-pom made of horsehair.
Interior leather lining cut into 6 lobes of black varnished leather (one torn); bordered with a golden ironwork decoration like an officer's hat.
Very good condition, interior lining used, missing the chinstrap of the chinstraps.

This helmet has a finishing interior and shell for an officer, it may be attributed to a non-commissioned officer of the Paris regiment.
