OFFICER HELMET OF CUIRASSIERS, MODEL 1872, modified 1874, Third Republic.
Comprising a skull; a visor; a neck guard; a copper headband; two chinstraps; a crest; a mane; a plume holder; a crest ornament; and an inner lining.
Skull embossed at the balance, in planed nickel-plated copper hammered. Perforated at the top with three air vent holes.
Visor tilted at 53 degrees below a horizontal plane passing through the junction of the visor and the skull. Edged with a 7.6 mm wide gilded copper circle placed astride its edges and fastened at the ends with a rivet. Underside of the visor lined with green leather. Visor width 5 cm.
Neck guard composed of: a circular band on its flat surface, welded under the posterior edge of the band it extends, with three golden brass nails riveted inside; a second concave band, forming a throat, with rounded corners and welded inward, at the bottom of the first one. Like the visor, the neck guard is edged with a 7 mm wide gilded copper setting, placed astride. It is lined with black waxed leather.
Headband, in gilded copper, stamped with a flaming grenade surrounded by laurel leaves, adhering to the skull. Its base rests on the visor and its ends are riveted to the skull in the part masked by the chinstrap rosette. Height of the headband at the front 6.5 cm.
Each chinstrap is composed of 9 embossed copper ornament scales, relief-stamped with laurel leaves, progressively decreasing in width (max width 4.2 cm, min width 2 cm). These scales are fastened with flattened wire staples on a leather core lined with black velvet. At the other end, against a black varnished calf leather chinstrap (replacement). The upper scale of each chinstrap is terminated by a rounded portion embossed with a circular rosette representing relief laurel leaves (rosette diameter 5.3 cm) and fastened to the skull by a screw.
The skull is topped with a gilded copper crest composed of two wings, a mask, and a cover.
The wings, placed vertically at a distance of 3.2 cm in front and 2.5 cm behind, have the shape of a convex curvilinear triangle at its upper part and join the skull by its concave base forming a scalloped edge.
This edge is fixed to the skull by 4 round-headed copper screws secured inside the helmet with square copper nuts.
The wings are adorned with palmettes and a border net at their upper edge; the edge is embossed with water leaves, all in relief.
A tin plate connects the upper edges of the wings, fixing their separation.
The mask serving as the anterior junction of the two wings by means of a weld, is embossed with a relief Medusa head. The cover, also embossed, represents the continuation of the Medusa head's hair with intertwined serpents.
Crest ornament composed of a 2.4 cm high sleeve, 4.6 cm in diameter, embossed with relief water leaves and a 2.5 cm high, 1.9 cm diameter lens formed by two embossed shells. Mounted on the front of the crest and supporting a scarlet pompom of horsehair (Height 4.6 cm).
Mane of black-dyed horsehair, mounted on a strong nourished cowhide sole, in which the hairs are assembled with tinned brass threads with a leather piece glued with strong glue to the assembly; the void between the two rows of hair is filled with a braid starting from the top and following the curve of the crest to its junction with the skull. Mane length 60 cm.
Plume holder embossed in copper, height 3.5 cm, forming a square-section sleeve, fixed obliquely.
Inner lining made of glossy brown leather, cut with seven wolf teeth each fitted with a metal eyelet, and gilded on their outer edge.
In good condition, the skull with slight dents and some traces of nickel plating oxidation, mostly missing gilding.
