OFFICER'S HELMET OF THE CUIRASSIERS, MODEL 1872, MODIFIED 1874, THIRD REPUBLIC.

Comprising a shell; a visor; a neck protector; a copper band; two chin scales; a crest; a mane; a plume holder; a crest ornament and an interior lining.
Shell embossed with a balance, in planished silvered copper hammered. Pierced at the top with three suction holes.
Visor inclined at 53 degrees below a horizontal plane passing through the juncture of the visor and the shell. Edged with a 7.6mm wide gilded copper circle placed astride its edges and secured at the ends by a rivet. Underside of visor lined with green leather. Visor width 5 cm.
Neck protector composed of: a flat circular band, welded under the posterior edge of the band it extends, it has three golden brass nails with hemispherical heads riveted inside; a second concave band, forming a throat, with rounded angles and welded inside, at the bottom of the first. Like the visor, the neck protector is edged with a 7mm wide gilded copper rim, placed astride. It is lined with black waxed leather.
Copper band, gilded, stamped with a flaming grenade surrounded by laurel leaves, adhering to the shell. Its base rests on the visor and its ends are riveted to the shell in the part hidden by the chin scale rosette. Height of the band at the front 6.5 cm.
Each chin scale is composed of 9 ornamental copper scales, cut and embossed in relief with laurel leaves, decreasing in width (max width 4.2 cm, min width 2 cm). These scales are fastened with flat iron wire rivets, plated on a black velvet-lined leather core.
At the other end against black varnished calf strap (replaced).
Upper scale of each chin strap ending in a rounded part stamped with a circular rosette featuring relief laurel leaves (rosette diameter 5.3 cm).
The shell is topped with a gilded copper crest composed of two flaps, a mask, and a covering.
The flaps, placed vertically at a distance of 3.2 cm in front and 2.5 cm behind, have the shape of a convex curvilinear triangle at their upper part and are connected to the shell by their concave base forming a scalloped edge.
This edge is secured to the shell by 4 round-headed drop-shaped copper screws that are secured inside the helmet by copper square nuts.
The flaps are adorned with palmettes and a border net at their upper edge; the rim is decorated with water leaves, all embossed in relief.
A tin plate joins the upper edges of the flaps, fixing their spacing.
The mask serving as the anterior junction of the two flaps by means of a solder, is embossed with a relief head of Medusa. The covering, also embossed, represents the continuation of Medusa's hair with intertwined snakes.
Crest ornament composed of a 2.4 cm high socket, diameter 4.6 cm, embossed with relief water leaves and a 2.5 cm high, 1.9 cm diameter lens formed of two embossed shells. Fixed on the front of the crest and supporting a scarlet tuft of horsehair (height 4.6 cm).
Mane of black-dyed horsehair, mounted on a strong nourished cowhide sole, in which the hairs are assembled with tinned brass threads with a piece of sheepskin glued with strong glue on the assemblage; the empty space between the two rows of hairs is filled with a braid that starts from the top and follows the crest curve until its junction with the shell. Mane length 95 cm.
Copper plume holder embossed, height 3.5 cm, forming a square section socket, fixed obliquely.
Interior lining of polished brown leather, cut with seven wolf teeth each furnished with a metal eyelet and gilded on their outer edge with a hot iron.

Good condition, the shell has retained its silver plating, on its right rear part it has a straightened dent and some dents and bumps; the brass fittings have retained their gilding, the interior liner is in very good condition, the mane has kept its original very lush length.
Helmet coming directly from the family, never cleaned since the period.
