OFFICER'S CUIRASSIER HELMET, model 1845, IN ITS TRANSPORT BOX, July Monarchy - Second Empire. 34446

Helmet made of copper plated with silver. It is deep and inclined backwards, typical of the early helmets from this period; the subsequent model after 1845 will be less tall. The groove at the base of the helmet is of the 1844-1845 model with a prominent molding consisting of a square and a round thread. H 13 cm (from the base of the groove to the top of the helmet), H 21.5 cm (from the base of the turban to the top of the helmet). Strong leather turban covered with a black band of sea cow (subsequently replaced with seal) that laces up at the back with six metal eyelets on each side. H 12.5 cm at the front, H 7.5 cm on the sides. Visor and neck cover made of copper plated with silver, each bordered with a folded golden brass strip straddling the outer edge. Green leather lined visor, black leather lined neck cover.
Embossed and gilded brass crest, featuring a flaming bomb mask surmounted by a raised Medusa head with a crown of laurel and oak branches above, H 13 cm, W 4.2 cm; two flaps imprinted with a decreasing series of 8 flutes framed by acanthus leaf beads and palmettes, and in the upper part by a sequence of laurel leaves, H 11 cm; the cover plate embossed with a braided mane decoration. Brass crest ornament composed of an olive branch decorated with palmettes H 2.6 cm, D 6.3 cm, of a socket with laurel branches and palmettes H 3.3 cm, D 2.5 cm, the base adorned with a small toothed disc D 3.9 cm, and a scarlet horsehair plume H 5 cm with a base golden and chiselled brass ring.
Gilded brass plume holder decorated with laurel branches in the 1845 model. H 4.8 cm. Model 1845 chinstraps; mounted on a fine black cloth covered iron chin strap, covered with a decreasing series of interlocking brass and chiselled 8-shaped rings, maximum H 4.5 cm, minimum H 2.5 cm, ending with a rosette imprinted with laurel leaves D 5.5 cm, attached to the turban with a screw.
Black horsehair mane, with an apparent length of about 65 cm.
Interior cap made of leather cut into 9 wolf teeth, with the outer edges gilded with iron. Overall height of the helmet 40 cm. France. Very good condition.

TRANSPORT BOX made of wood and steel, with brass closures and handle, covered in dark green paper and sheathed inside with ivory chamois leather. Beautiful black printed paper label for shipping by "PARIS - SAINT-LAZARE" railway, second handwritten ink label of the time, "Mr. General Boyer, Commander of the subdivision, slow speed, Auxerre."
Fair condition, missing parts of the covering paper.
