PARIS GUARD HELMET, MODEL October 30, 1860, SECOND EMPIRE.
Helmet entirely made of steel. It consists of a skull, a visor, and a neck guard, all encircled with a brass rim folded over the outer edge, a headband, two chin straps, a crest, a mane of black horsehair approximately 70 cm in length, and a plume holder. All fittings are made of brass.
The skull is a single stamped piece. It is perforated inside with 4 suction holes for ventilation. Visor lined with green waxed leather. Neck guard with black waxed leather lining.
Front headband in relief-stamped brass featuring a radiant sun in the center with an imperial eagle (uncrowned) clutching Jupiter's thunderbolt in its talons. At the bottom of the headband, a banner bears the inscription "GARDE DE PARIS."
Back headband in plain brass but framed by relief fillet molding.
Crest composed of two fins stamped in relief with a decreasing sequence of eight oval-shaped drops, each separated by the same motif but smaller, adorned with leafy scrolls and laurel leaves at the rear; from the back of the fin, a water leaf rises diagonally both at the top and bottom, releasing a twisted molding at the top.
Each fin is attached to the skull by four steel screws; the mask is stamped with an upward-directed laurel branch and fixed at the bottom with a steel screw. The covering plate is undecorated steel.
Crest ornament consisting of a brass olive stamped with foliage, a brass socket stamped with laurel leaves, and a scarlet horsehair plume.
The chin straps are made of two sturdy cowhide chinpieces covered with black waxed leather, each covered by an intertwined figure-8 chain. They are attached to the skull with a steel screw and a round brass rosette stamped with a radiant sun.
Plume holder in brass, tubular and slightly tapered square section towards the bottom.
Interior leather liner cut in "wolf teeth" pattern. Complete but worn.
Very good condition, oxidation and some wear due to use.
