THE VETERAN MEDALLION OR ORDER OF THE TWO SWORDS - 2019, GUIMARAES Christophe.
The veteran medallion, or Order of the two swords, an honorary distinction established in 1771 by Louis XV, confirms for the first time the recognition of the sovereign towards his soldiers and junior non-commissioned officers who have completed their engagement in the service of the kingdom.
Following the service stripes embroidered on the sleeve of the uniform, valorizing 8 and 16 years of service, comes the veteran medallion symbolizing 24 years of service. This emblem inaugurates the distinctions granted by the king to the rank and file and junior non-commissioned officers.
A double medallion will confirm 48 years of service, and finally an exceptional triple medallion will be awarded to Jean Thurel (or Theurel), who served the kingdom for 72 years, under three different monarchies of the Ancien Régime! During the revolutionary period, the insignia will be worn by officers. It will still be worn by former veterans during the Restoration.
With this monograph which brings together around 110 documents, including no less than 85 unpublished ones, Christophe Guimares offers us the fourth installment dedicated to his favorite topic: phaleristics. There is no doubt that this study will interest researchers, collectors, and enthusiasts of military history. Furthermore, it effectively complements both older and modern publications on the subject, shedding new light on them.
