His military career truly begins during the conquest of Algeria, as a captain in the Foreign Legion. In 1837, newly promoted as captain, he distinguished himself in the siege of Constantine and received the Legion of Honor. In 1840, the year he was authorized by royal decree to call himself Leroy de Saint-Arnaud, General Schramm stated: "ardent officer and brave soldier; distinguished himself several times, worthy of advancement." In 1841, appointed battalion chief, he commanded the 1st Zouave Regiment and in 1842 became lieutenant colonel of the 53rd Light Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to divisional general after the expedition to Petite Kabylie in 1851.
He "distinguished himself" in the campaigns in Algeria with the "African" generals Cavaignac and Pelissier, under the command of General and future Marshal of France, Thomas Bugeaud.
