IMPERIAL GUARD CUIRASSIER HELMET, MODEL 1854, SECOND EMPIRE.
Steel helmet, H 16 cm. Neck guard and visor in steel banded with a brass strip folded over the outer edge. Front brass badge stamped with a crowned "N" surrounded by laurel branches. Brass crest composed of two finials stamped with a series of decreasing panels towards the back and a branch of laurel leaves, each fixed to the helmet using four brass screws. Mask stamped with flat moldings and a Medusa head in the upper part, fixed to the helmet with a brass screw. Brass crest ornament with scarlet horsehair plume. Black horsehair mane (later replaced) measuring 70 cm long. Brass plume holder decorated with laurel branches. Leather jugulars with chinstrap covered with a series of intertwined brass rings ending in a round brass rosette stamped with laurel leaves and secured to the helmet by a brass screw. Leather interior liner (largely torn and missing).
Poor condition, the right part of the helmet has been extensively restored with solder, crest restored, posterior crest ornament as well as the mane.
