SABER OF THE IMPERIAL GUARD SAILORS "MARINS DE LA GARDE", FIRST EMPIRE (1804-1815).
Saber entirely made of brass with a leather scabbard, the model of which was created in 1804 by the sword cutler DUC.
Guard with a hollow branch (H 12.2 cm without a quillon), outer ear in the shape of a shield (H 5.45 cm) engraved with an anchor, the guard branch ends with a ball quillon. The crossguard is hollow underneath.
Cap with a short tail (H 8.9 cm).
Wooden handle covered with leather, wrapped in a straight brass wire.
"Pennies" of "DUC" and the marine anchor stamped on the quillon.
Klingenthal blade, 69.5 cm long, 4.35 cm at the heel, and 7 cm at the arrow, back thickness at the heel about 1 cm, with a strong point bevel.
The hollow sections on each side are engraved with "GARDE IMPÉRIALE" in large cursive letters in a rope cartouche, anchor, and palmettes. Scarlet wool knot.
Length of the weapon alone 85 cm, weight 0.987 kilogram.
Wooden scabbard covered with black waxed leather, three brass fittings, chape, central bracelet, shoe; brass dart, brass rings. Brass ring pins. The leather of the scabbard is well stamped with an anchor under the shoe.
Length of the scabbard alone 72.5 cm, weight 0.540 kilogram.
Very good state of preservation. Oxidation of use on the blade. Some signs of use on the shoe and other fittings of the scabbard. Scabbard in good condition with some rubbing and chipping at the varnish level.
