OFFICER'S HELMET OF CUIRASSIERS, MODEL 1874, THIRD REPUBLIC.
One-piece helmet made of stamped nickel-plated steel. The top is pierced with three suction-cup holes (diameter 1.5 cm), with the interior of the helmet later repainted black. Marked with the manufacturer "A. GODILLOT" and sized "57".
Visor made of nickel-plated steel edged with a 1.6 cm brass strip placed on the outer edge; underside lined with green waxed leather, later replaced.
Nape cover similar to the visor, interior lined later with black waxed leather.
Brass headband embossed with a relief grenade surrounded by laurel leaves.
Each chin strap consists of 15 copper scales alternately cut with three or two scallops, decreasing in width from the top - 3.5 cm - to the bottom, which is only 2 cm wide.
The right chin strap is adorned at its end with a small copper plate riveted to which a copper buckle is attached. At the end of the left strap, there is a similar plate with a copper "D" adorned with a black varnished calf leather chinstrap.
The top scale of each chin strap is covered with a movable copper rosette, independent of the chin strap. It is circular in shape (diameter 42 mm) with four relief ridges.
Brass crest consisting of two fins, a mask, and a cover.
Fins adorned with palmettes and a border line at the top. The lower part features a festooned edge decorated with water leaves, attached to the helmet with two screws.
A tinplate connects the upper edges of the fins, setting their spacing.
The mask is embossed with a relief head of Medusa. The cover, also embossed, depicts the continuation of the Medusa head's hair with intertwined snakes (length 9 cm).
Crest ornament consisting of an embossed sleeve with relief water leaves and a lens formed by two embossed shells. Attached to the front of the crest and supporting a scarlet pom-pom of horsehair, height 4.5 cm.
Black horsehair mane, 65 cm long.
Embossed brass plumet holder, tubular in shape with a slightly tapering square section, height 3.2 cm.
Interior lining composed of a turban and a glossy black sheepskin cap, cut with 8 wolf teeth. The cap is old but not original as it is of a larger size.
Good condition, except for oxidation on the nickel plating under the crest, mainly visible at the rear end of the crest.
