HELMET OF THE 4th SQUADRON OF THE REGIMENT OF THE GUARD CUIRASSIERS "Garde-Kürassier - Regt.", model April 25, 1867, REIGN OF WILHELM I (1867-1888)
Hemispherical helmet, upper part of the spike and scales of the chinstrap in tombac, a copper and zinc alloy giving a reddish aspect to the whole, other metal parts in white metal, Neusilber, similar to nickel silver. Rim and rivets in white metal. Double visor, forming a step, green lacquered on the inside. Helmet, visor, and neck guard edged with white metal folded over the edge. Neck guard, black lacquered on the inside, highly arched in its length and width, consisting of three independent pieces held together by six large half-spherical rivets, five other rivets elegantly dress the bottom. Marked at the center at the back "G K R. 4E.". Order of the Black Eagle plate of 117 mm in diameter, in white metal, central round motif in tombac with removable black lacquered eagle, surrounded by a first circular banderole adorned at its base with a laurel wreath and bearing in its height the Latin motto 'SUUM CUIQUE' (To Each His Own). The plate assembly forms a radiant sun shape, second circular banderole with Prussian motto 'MIT.GOTT.FÜR.KÖNIG.UND.VATERLAND.1860.', diameter 12.5 cm. On the back of the plate, four welded cross-shaped turrets allow it to be engaged in the four cross-shaped perforations on the front of the helmet, with four leather corners forcibly inserted to secure it. Plate model 1842 modified 1860. Crest made of a base and a tubular part in white metal, held by four half-spherical rivets in the same metal. Pierced in its center with a hole for ventilation. Small spike in tombac. Toothed cockade in steel sheet, 7.4 cm in diameter, in the colors of Prussia, black and white, affixed to the right side of the chinstrap. (Single cockade on the right side until 1897). Chinstrap fastened by split half-spherical screws, upper scale (marked L.G) of each chinstrap covered with a mobile copper rosette, independent of the chinstrap itself. Each one is composed of 15 bulging tombac scales alternately cut into two or three festoons, decreasing in width from 3.4 cm to 1.9 cm. Scales fixed with flat wire staples on a leather core lined with basane. Left chinstrap adorned at its end with a small tenon to attach the other chinstrap in which a hollow notch has been made. Interior of the helmet black lacquered, as well as the neck guard, visor dark green lacquered. Interior leather liner made of 7 wolf teeth sewn on a thick raw leather headband. Very good state of preservation, some wear on the helmet, worn interior liner.
Height of the helmet about 18 cm, total height of the helmet with the spike 27 cm.
Very good condition, old reinforcement welds on the visor rim and at the top of the neck guard, cockade with some chipping and oxidation, worn interior liner.

NOTE: It is with this type of helmet that the Prussian cuirassiers fought during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, where the guard cuirassiers are in the reserve of the Prussian cavalry during the battle of Saint-Privat, they are engaged near Sedan on September 1, 1870.
