CUIRASSIER TROOP HELMET, MODEL 1872 MODIFIED 1874, THIRD REPUBLIC
Entirely made of steel with brass trimmings. The helmet, made of cast and pressed steel, is pierced at the top with three suction holes. Stamped by the manufacturer "S. G. F. M." likely size "56"? Helmet height 11.5 cm. Total height 31.5 cm.
Visor, 5.5 cm wide, lined with a 6 mm wide brass strip placed on the edges. Underside of the visor coated with waxed green leather and the underside of the neck cover waxed brown.
Neck cover composed of a circular band on its flat surface, welded under the posterior edge of the band it extends, featuring three brass nails with half-spherical heads riveted inside; a second concave band, forming a collar, with rounded angles and welded inside, at the bottom of the first band, bordered by a copper setting placed on top.
Headband, in brass, embossed with a flaming grenade, surrounded by laurel leaves, adhering to the helmet. Its base rests on the visor and its ends are riveted to the helmet in the part concealed by the chinstrap rosette.
Each chinstrap is composed of 15 copper scales cut alternatively in groups of three or two diminishing in width, fixed with flat wire staples on a core of leather lined with black sheepskin (max width 3.5 cm, min width 1.9 cm). The chinstrap on the right is adorned at its end with a small copper plate riveted to which a buckle also in copper is attached. At the end of the left chinstrap, there is a similar plate holding a copper D embellished with a black varnished calf counter-sword.
The top scale of each chinstrap is covered with a circular copper rosette, measuring 4.5 cm in diameter, depicting four relief ridges.
The helmet is topped with a copper crest composed of two flaps, a mask, and a covering.
Flaps adorned with palmettes and a fillet on their upper edge; the rim is decorated with water leaves, all embossed in relief.
A tinplate reunites the upper edges of the flaps, fixing their spacing.
The mask acting as the anterior junction for the two flaps by means of a weld, is embossed with a relief head of Medusa. The covering, also embossed, represents the continuation of Medusa's hair with intertwined snakes. The crest is attached to the helmet with two brass screws. Black horsehair mane approximately 75 cm long. Stamped copper plume holder, height 3.5 cm, forming a socket, fixed obliquely, from bottom to top, to the helmet, a little forward of the left chinstrap, by means of two threaded rods passing through the helmet. The interior lining consists of a leather turban and a brown sheepskin coif with 7 wolf teeth. The crest is adorned with a socket, missing the lens. Fixed on the front of the crest and supporting a scarlet pompon of horsehair tuft.
