SUPERIOR OFFICER'S NAVAL SABER, model 1848, Second Republic.
Gilded brass hilt. Guard with two branches forming a shell at the front decorated and pierced with a naval anchor on a background of reeds and oak leaves. Cap with a long tail decorated with floral motifs. Ebony handle. Slightly curved white blade with grooves and hollow edges, a rounded back, length 61.2 cm. Scarlet cloth tie. Black varnished leather scabbard with three richly decorated gilded brass fittings depicting naval trophies and scallop shells, including an anchor, trident, dolphin, cannon, trumpet, rope, and various others. The throat has a belt ring and a button in the shape of a sea god for wearing on the belt. The central fitting has one belt ring.
Good condition, the blade has some oxidation spots, the leather of the scabbard is in fair condition (it has been re-dyed).
