OFFICER'S BELT PLATE OF THE ENGINEERS, model from the 1st Vendémiaire Year XII (24 September 1803), First Empire. 14834
Plate: finely embossed in brass, in rectangular shape (width 87 mm; height 70 mm), depicting in the center the trophy of the engineer corps - a cuirass topped with the "pot-en-tête" (width 31 mm; height 51 mm) on a relief sand background (rare variant); the plate is framed by three bars: an inner smooth molded groove polished with Agate stone, a second molding with raised edges and a ribbed concave background garnished with a series of raised smooth head studs, and finally, the outer molding with raised edges and a narrow sand relief background.
This brass plate is mounted with the edges bent at the back on a copper plate, hence the type of plate known as a "covering plate" (as opposed to cast plates).
On the back, the plate is complete with its hook (width 24 mm; height 18 mm) and its belt loop (height 61 mm; diameter 3 mm) with its two prongs.
The missing rear lining is a whitened calf leather that was originally glued to the plate.
