PROVENANCE:
Former collection of Bernard FRANCK (1848-1924), industrialist, Paris. Prints and drawings.
Born and died in Paris, Bernard Franck (his descendants later combined the first name and last name and adopted the patronymic name of Bernard-Franck) studied in secondary school in this city. He then underwent a two-year internship in America. During the 1870 war, he served as a corporal in the "Mobile" infantry; he enlisted for the duration of hostilities in the 1st Zouave Regiment. Captured, he escaped, resumed service in the Army of the Loire, and was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour for his exemplary conduct. He managed, with his father, the family firm founded in 1804 by his grandfather, a manufacturer of military equipment, which still exists today. Grandson and great-nephews of soldiers of the Empire, son of a collector, he naturally became a collector himself, starting mostly with objects related to military life, mainly during the Revolution and the Empire: weapons, insignia, miniature portraits, paintings, drawings, prints, books, including costume compilations. His interest later expanded to include display objects from the same periods and earlier, shining with the refined 18th century productions. The collector often lent items for various exhibitions, for example: retrospect of the 1900 Universal Exhibition (entire special showcase acquired by Pierpont Morgan, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York), Exhibition of French 18th Century Art, Brussels 1904 (80 pieces); Centennial Exhibition of Eugène Isabey and Raffet, Paris, 1904 (20 miniatures); Exhibition of the 18th century, Paris, National Library, 1906 (15 miniatures), etc. Part of the collections that Bernard Franck had assembled over fifty years of effort was dispersed in about fifteen public auctions, most anonymously; below is the account of the five most important auctions held under his name. Another part, remaining in the family, suffered significant thefts during the German occupation in the Second World War. Fortunately, entire crates were found and recovered. The color and gold label can be found on the back of the frames.
