PROVENANCE:
Former collection of Bernard FRANCK (1848-1924), industrialist, Paris. Prints and drawings.
Born and died in Paris, Bernard Franck (his descendants later combined the first name and last name and adopted the surname Bernard-Franck) completed his secondary education in the city. He then spent two years interning in America. During the 1870 war, he served as a corporal in the "Mobile" and enlisted for the duration of hostilities in the 1st Zouave Regiment. Captured as a prisoner, he escaped, rejoined the army of the Loire, and was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor for his gallant conduct. He managed the family firm, founded in 1804 by his grandfather, along with his father, a manufacturer of military equipment that still exists today. Grandson and great-nephews of soldiers of the Empire, son of a collector, he naturally became a collector himself, focusing initially on objects related to military life, especially during the Revolution and the Empire: weapons, insignia, miniature portraits, paintings, drawings, prints, books, notably costume collections. His interests later expanded to include display objects from the same periods and previous ones, particularly the refined 18th century. The collector often loaned items for various exhibitions, such as the 1900 Universal Exposition retrospective (a whole special display case acquired by Pierpont Morgan and now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York), Exposition of French Art of the 18th century, Brussels 1904 (80 pieces); Centenary Exhibition of Eugène Isabey and Raffet, Paris, 1904 (20 miniatures); Exhibition of the 18th century, Paris, National Library, 1906 (15 miniatures), etc. Part of Bernard Franck's collections amassed over fifty years were dispersed in around fifteen public auctions, most of them anonymous; we provide below a summary of the five most significant sales conducted under his name. Another part that remained in the family suffered significant thefts during the German occupation in the Second World War. Fortunately, entire crates were eventually found and recovered.
The label, in color and gold, is located on the back of the frames.
