PROVENANCE:
Former collection of Bernard FRANCK (1848-1924), industrialist, Paris. Prints and drawings.
Born and died in Paris, Bernard Franck (his descendants later combined the first name and surname and adopted the patronymic name Bernard-Franck) studied in secondary school in this city. He then spent two years in America. During the 1870 war, he served as a corporal in the "Mobile" forces and then joined the 1st Zouaves regiment for the duration of hostilities. After being captured, he escaped, rejoined the Army of the Loire, and was awarded the Knight of the Legion of Honor for his gallant conduct. Alongside his father, he managed the family firm founded in 1804 by his grandfather, a military equipment manufacturer that still exists today. As the grandson and great-nephews of soldiers from the Empire and the son of a collector, he naturally became a collector himself, starting with objects related to military life, particularly during the Revolution and the Empire: weapons, insignia, portrait miniatures, paintings, drawings, prints, books, especially costume collections. His interest later expanded to display items from the same periods and earlier, including the shining 18th century known for its refinement. The collector often lent his pieces for various exhibitions, for example: the retrospective of the 1900 Universal Exposition (a whole special display case acquired by Pierpont Morgan, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York), the Exhibition of French 18th Century Art in Brussels in 1904 (80 pieces), the Centennial Exhibition of Eugène Isabey and Raffet in Paris in 1904 (20 miniatures), the 18th-century Exhibition at the National Library in Paris in 1906 (15 miniatures), and more. Part of the collections Bernard Franck had assembled over fifty years was dispersed in about fifteen public sales, mostly anonymous. A portion that remained in the family suffered significant thefts during the German occupation in the Second World War. Fortunately, entire crates were found and recovered.
The label, in color and gold, is located on the back of the frames.
