BRIGADE GENERAL'S CUIRASSIER HELMET, STAFF PATENT, MODEL 1875, IN ITS CARRYING CASE WITH ITS ARMBAND, THIRD REPUBLIC.
HELMET COMPONENTS: a shell; a visor; a neck guard; a copper band; two chin scales; a crest; a mane; a plume socket; a crest ornament; and an inner lining.
Shell stamped with a balancer, chrome-plated metal hammered flat. Pierced at the top with 6 vent holes. Height of the shell 12.5 cm.
Visor inclined at 53 degrees below a horizontal plane passing through the junction of the visor and the shell. Edged with a 7 mm wide gilded copper circle placed astride its edges and attached at the ends by a rivet. Underside of the visor lined with black waxed leather. Visor width 5.4 cm.
Neck guard composed of: a circular band on its flat surface, welded under the rear edge of the band it extends, featuring three brass nails with hemispherical heads riveted inside; a second concave band, forming a throat, with rounded corners and welded inside, at the bottom of the first band. Like the visor, the neck guard is bordered with a 6.1 mm wide gilded copper rim, placed astride. Missing the lining of the neck guard.
Copper band, gilded, stamped with a flaming grenade encircled by laurel leaves adheres to the shell. Its base rests on the visor and its ends are riveted to the shell in the area concealed by the chin scale rosette. Height of the band at the front 6.7 cm. A silver star is fastened to the band on either side of the flaming grenade, with each star's diameter being 2.3 cm.
Each chin scale consists of 9 decorative copper scales cut out and embossed with laurel leaves, decreasing in width (max width 4.2 cm, min width 2 cm). These scales are fastened by flat iron wire studs on a leather core lined with black velvet. At the other end, a black varnished calf skin chinstrap (replaced).
Upper scale of each chin scale terminates in a rounded portion embossed with a circular rosette featuring relief laurel leaves (rosette diameter 5.3 cm).
The shell is topped with a gilded copper crest composed of two fins, a mask, and a cover.
The fins, vertically spaced 5 cm apart at the front and 3.2 cm at the back, have the shape of a convex curvilinear triangle at its upper part, connecting to the shell through its concave base forming a scalloped edge.
This edge is attached to the shell using 4 round-capped copper screws secured inside the helmet by square copper nuts (missing one screw).
The fins are decorated with palmettes and a border net at their upper edge; the edge is adorned with water leaves, all embossed in relief.
A tinned sheet metal plate connects the upper edges of the fins fixing the spacing.
The mask, serving as the front junction between the two fins through a solder joint, is embossed with a relief head of Medusa at the top and a palmette at the bottom. At the center of the mask, a winged lightning bolt in silver metal, a symbol of the staff, is affixed. The cover, also embossed, represents the continuation of the Medusa head's hair with entwined serpents.
Crest ornament consisting of a sleeve 2.4 cm in height, 4.6 cm in diameter, embossed with relief water leaves and a lens 2.6 cm high and 1.9 cm in diameter, formed by two embossed shells. Attached to the front of the crest and supporting a scattered plume of horsehair (H 4.5 cm).
Black dyed horsehair mane mounted on a strong nourished cowhide sole, in which the hair is assembled with tinned brass threads with a leather piece glued strongly to the assembly; the space left empty between the two rows of hair is filled with a braid that starts from the top and follows the crest's curve to its junction with the shell. Mane length 70 cm.
Embossed copper plume socket, 3.5 cm high, forming a sleeve with square sections, fixed obliquely, engraved on each face with a laurel leaf.
Black waxed leather inner lining cut into wolf teeth and gilded on the edges, largely missing, each fitted with a metal eyelet.
Very good condition except for the inner liner.
SUPERIOR OFFICER'S EGRET IN WHITE HERON FEATHERS, HEIGHT 20 cm, adorned at its base with three rows of small tricolor dyed feathers (blue at the bottom, scarlet at the top) over a height of 4 cm surmounted by an ivory ring held by two metal threads. The egret is mounted on a whalebone with a metal spring at the bottom. Silver thread olive pompom 2.8 cm high. Total height 29.5 cm.
Perfect condition.
Rectangular carrying case (33 cm x 37.5 cm, H 23 cm). Made of wood covered in green shagreen with brass handles and locks. White calf lining.
Good condition, some paper loss, cracks and small wood losses.
Chief of Staff armband attached to the commanding general.
In white and scarlet silk, embroidered in its center with the winged staff lightning bolt, in golden threads, sequins, and gold cannetilles. It is bordered at the top and bottom with a golden braid. Fastening loops in gilded brass. Lined with red silk.

Former collection of Dr. Levier. This helmet is featured in the magazine "Uniformes" Special Issue No. 5, 4th quarter 1981, page 46, illustration 88.
NOTE:
This brigade commander's Cuirassier General's helmet follows the regulations of August 6, 1875. As for the dress of cavalry brigade staff officers, it includes the silver lightning bolt on the front of the crest. The general owning this helmet must have been staff patented, then must have become a general while retaining his staff insignia, a non-regulation decoration.
