HELMET AND BREASTPLATE TROOPER OF CUIRASSIERS, MODEL 1872 MODIFIED 1874, THIRD REPUBLIC.
HELMET
Helmet entirely made of steel with brass fittings.
It consists of:
Bomb, made of cast and pressed steel, pierced at the top with three suction holes. Stamped by the manufacturer "A. GODILLOT" size "58", numbered "6", height of the bomb 11.5 cm. Total height 31.5 cm.
Visor, 5.5 cm wide, edged with a 6 mm wide brass strip placed on top of its edges. Underside of visor covered in brown waxed leather, with the underside of the neck guard missing.
Neck guard composed of a circular band on its flat surface, welded under the rear edge of the band it extends, containing three gilded brass nails with half-spherical heads riveted on the inside; of a second concave band forming a groove, with rounded angles and welded inwards, at the bottom of the first band, bordered by a copper setting placed on top.
Headband, in brass, stamped with a flaming grenade adorned with laurel leaves, adhering to the bomb. Its base rests on the visor and its ends are riveted to the bomb in the part concealed by the rosette of the chinstrap.
Each chinstrap is made up of 15 copper scales cut alternately in groups of three or two scallops decreasing in width, fastened with flat iron staples on a core of leather lined with black sheepskin (maximum width 3.5 cm, minimum width 1.9 cm). The right chinstrap is equipped at its end with a small copper plate riveted to which a buckle also in copper is attached. At the end of the left one, there is a similar plate fitting a copper "D" embossed with a black varnished calf leather neck guard.
The top scale of each chinstrap is covered with a circular copper rosette, measuring 4.5 cm in diameter, representing four relief ribs.
The bomb is topped with a copper crest consisting of two fins, a mask, and a cover.
The fins are adorned with palmettes and a border at their upper edge; the edge is decorated with water leaves, all stamped in relief.
A tin-plated plate joins the upper edges of the fins, fixing their spacing.
The mask, serving as the front junction of the two fins by means of soldering, is embossed with a raised head of Medusa. The cover, also stamped, represents the continuation of the hair of the head of Medusa with intertwined snakes. The crest is fixed to the bomb by means of two brass screws.
Black horsehair mane approximately 73 cm long.
Embossed copper plume holder, height 3.5 cm, forming a socket, fixed obliquely, from bottom to top, to the bomb, slightly in front of the left chinstrap, using two threaded rods passing through the bomb.
The interior lining consists of a leather turban and a brown sheepskin coif with 7 wolf teeth.
Crest adorned with a socket and a lens formed by two stamped shells of flowers and palmettos. Attached to the front of the crest and supporting a scarlet pompom made of tufts of hair.
Very good state of conservation, some light pits on the bomb.

BREASTPLATE TROOPER OF CUIRASSIER MODEL 1855 modified 1891, THIRD REPUBLIC.
Made of cast steel, oil quenched and blue tempered on sand.
Curved shape at the waist, the base has a flared shape; the busk of the breastplate is accentuated and the edge of the backplate pronounced. The breastplate is adorned with 4 brass rivets, and the backplate with 6.
Each of the two shoulder straps has a black cowhide body, adorned with two brass chains; the body is finished with a brass buttonhole plate with a heart-shaped leather end; the shoulder strap holder is made of brass with 3 rivets.
Brown leather belt with brass buckle.
Plastron markings illegible, numbered "1391", backplate marked "Manufacture d'armes de Châtellerault October 1895 3rd size extra width no. 1" and numbered "1872".
Perfect condition.
