OFFICER HELMET OF CUIRASSIER, MODEL 1872, MODIFIED 1874, IN ITS TRANSPORT BOX, THIRD REPUBLIC.
HELMET COMPONENTS: a shell; a visor; a neck guard; a copper headband; two chin straps; a crest; a mane; a plume holder; a crest ornament and an interior lining.
Shell stamped on the balance, in hammered planed chrome metal. Pierced at the top with three suction holes.
Visor inclined at 53 degrees below a horizontal plane passing through the junction of the visor and the shell. Edged with a 7.6 mm wide gilded copper circle placed astride its edges and fixed at the extremities by a rivet. Underside of visor covered in green leather. Visor width 5 cm.
Neck guard composed of: a circular band on its flat side, welded under the posterior edge of the band it extends, it has three brass nails with half-spherical heads riveted inside; a second concave band, forming a throat, with rounded angles and welded inside, at the bottom of the first band. Like the visor, the neck guard is bordered by a 7 mm wide gilded copper setting, placed astride. It is lined with black waxed leather.
Copper headband, stamped with a flaming grenade surrounded by laurel leaves, adheres to the shell. Its base rests on the visor and its ends are riveted to the shell in the part hidden by the chin strap rosette. Height of the headband at the front 6.5 cm.
Each chin strap is composed of 9 cut copper ornament leaves, embossed in relief with laurel leaves, decreasing in width (max width 4.2 cm, min width 2 cm). These scales are attached by flattened wire staples on a black velvet-lined leather core.
At the other end, black varnished calf leather against gullet (replaced).
Upper scale of each chin strap terminated by a rounded part embossed with a circular rosette featuring relief laurel leaves (rosette diameter 5.3 cm).
The shell is surmounted by a gilded copper crest composed of two fins, a mask, and a cover.
The fins, placed vertically at a distance of 32 mm in front and 25 mm in the back, have the shape of a convex curvilinear triangle at its upper part, connecting with the shell by its concave base forming a scalloped rim.
This rim is attached to the shell by 4 round-headed copper screws with square nuts on the inside of the helmet.
The fins are adorned with palmettes and a border along their upper edge; the rim is embossed with water leaves, all in relief.
A tin plate joins the upper edges of the fins fixing their separation.
The mask, serving as the anterior junction of the two fins by means of a weld, is embossed with a relief Medusa head. The cover, also embossed, represents the continuation of the Medusa head's hair with intertwined snakes.
Crest ornament composed of a socket 2.4 cm high, diameter 4.6 cm, embossed with relief water leaves and a lens 2.5 cm high and 1.9 cm in diameter, formed of two embossed shells. Attached to the front of the crest and supporting a plume holder with a tuft of horsehair (H 4.6 cm).
Black dyed horsehair mane mounted on a strong nourished cowhide sole, in which the horsehair is assembled with tinned brass wires with a leather base glued with strong glue; the empty space between the two rows of hair is filled with a braid that starts from the top and follows the crest's curve until its junction with the shell. Mane length 65 cm.
Copper embossed plume holder, height 3.5 cm, forming a socket with square sections, fixed obliquely.
Interior lining in glossy brown leather, cut with seven wolf teeth, each equipped with a metal eyelet and gilded on their outer edge.
In perfect condition close to new, some tiny dents on the shell, chin strap rosettes with missing central drop.
PLUME
Officer's plume in scarlet feathers (H 18.5 cm) mounted on a steel spring with a whalebone (total H 25 cm). Olive pompon in 3 cm high gold embroidery.
TRANSPORT BOX
Wooden box covered in dark green paper, with brass hinges and handle, ivory chamois interior lining.
Very good condition, some paper losses and a small accident at the bottom on the left side.
