CAPTAIN COMMANDANT JOSEPH JÉRÔME DE JOYBERT'S HUSSAR CAPTAIN DOLMAN, 1st REGIMENT, MODEL 1860, SECOND EMPIRE.
Made of sky blue cloth with crimson collar and cuffs, entirely trimmed with silver braid. The collar is bordered at the top and bottom with a 1.5 cm high silver braid. The cuffs are adorned with four 2 cm wide silver grade braids each. The front edges of the dolman are adorned with silver braid, and the back seams are covered with three silver braids. The dolman fastens straight at the front with 17 silver bell buttons mounted on gilt brass. Each front panel is decorated with 17 silver braids edged with half-spherical silver uniform buttons on the outside. On the left side, from the top down, the 2nd and 3rd braids are embellished with silver braid cords and threads intended to hold decorations.
The inner lining is made of ecru silk trimmed at the edges and collar with crimson cloth. The collar itself is lined with dark blue velvet. The lower part is lined with ocher waxed Morocco leather. Black silk label with gold text inside reads: "ZELLMEYER Master Tailor 1st Hussars."
In very good condition, with some moth holes mainly at the lower part, a period repair to the inner lining at the lower part, the braids and buttons are in superb condition, some slight moth damage at the back.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT:
The 1st Hussar Regiment was in Algeria in 1859, in 1860 it took part in the Syrian expedition before returning to Algeria from 1864 to 1865. In 1870, it was assigned to the Army of Châlon and participated in the Battle of Sedan.
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION:
Joseph Jérôme de Joybert was born on March 14, 1825, in Angers, Maine-et-Loire. He was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honor on August 12, 1864, and promoted to Officer on July 12, 1879, while serving as colonel of the 2nd Dragoon Regiment.
