HELMET OF A CUIRASSIER TROOPER, MODEL 1858, SECOND EMPIRE.
Iron helmet stamped on the back with 4th Cuirassiers (4C) dated 1874 “74”, numbered “664”, the gutter at the base of the helmet is of the 1858 model with a simple round rim.
Leather turban covered with a later blackened cowhide band.
Iron visor and neck guard each bordered with a folded rim running along the outer edge.
Brass crest, consisting of a mask stamped with a flaming bomb surmounted by a relief head of Medusa with a crown of laurel and oak branches above; two flaps decorated with a decreasing series of 8 raised ribs framed by acanthus leaves and palmettes and in the upper part by a series of laurel leaves; cover plate embossed with a motif depicting a braided mane.
Crest ornament in brass and red horsehair, reconstructed.
Brass crest holder decorated with laurel branches.
1858 model chin straps; mounted on a leather chinstrap covered with a series of rings ending in a rosette stamped with laurel leaves, attached to the turban with a screw.
Black horsehair mane, posterior, with an apparent length of approximately 60 cm.
Interior lining in leather cut into wolf's teeth.
