Scarlet horsehair plume. Each chinstrap composed of a leather chin strap (replaced) to which is attached a chain in the shape of interlaced eights sloping forward and ending in a small buckle chain. Round brass rosette embossed in relief with a radiant sun with outer border in silvered metal, with a brass star attached at the center screwing onto the bomb. Inner cap in black sheepskin cut into wolf teeth.
France.
Second half of the 19th century.
Very good condition.
NOTE:
This helmet is an authentic piece, the skullcap has not been pierced, it is a Second Empire period assembly using a new 1830 model skullcap that remained in stock. The silvered metal bordered bands and rosettes are a fancy touch that could be attributed to a specific manufacture for a foreign guard. Indeed, many countries ordered military equipment, armaments, and uniforms from French suppliers for their respective forces, often being offered a modification of an existing French model. For helmets, for example, the band or the crest decoration could be altered.
Egypt placed an order for a series of carabinier helmets that had their fittings improved and band decoration modified for the regiment of the close guard of the elite Royal Guard of the Khedive of Egypt. Around 1840-1860.
This decoration was later modified again to bring them back to their original French style a few years later.
