Helmet and breastplate set of Cuirassiers from the Imperial Guard, model 1854, Second Empire.
HELMET with steel shell, visor, and neck guard with brass fittings. Front band embossed with a crowned N resting on two laurel branches. Crest composed of: two fins embossed with a series of decreasing panels towards the back and bordered at the top with laurel leaves; and an embossed relief mask at the top depicting the head of Medusa. Crest ornament in brass adorned with scarlet horsehair. Black horsehair mane with a braided plait in the center. Chin strap with interlaced rings, with rosettes embossed with laurel leaves. Interior leather liner. Good condition. Shell marked "120", dated 1856, stamped with the imperial crown and "2C" (2nd Regiment of Cuirassiers of the Guard).
BREASTPLATE made of steel consisting of a backplate and a breastplate, both marked on the outer edges "926" scratched out and re-marked "52". Breastplate bordered with 21 brass studs, with a hook for the aiguillette and a cartridge box button, and marked inside "Imperial Manufacture Klingenthal Coulaux & Cpie - 2nd size 2nd width".
Backplate bordered with 39 brass studs, adorned at the top with two leather straps covered with a chain mail in the shape of intertwined 8s in brass with a steel lock, and at the bottom with a black leather belt (later addition). Backplate marked "Imperial Manufacture Klingenthal Coulaux & Cpie 1856 - 1st size 1st width". Very good condition.
