PARIS GUARD HELMET, MODEL October 30, 1860, SECOND EMPIRE.
Helmet entirely made of steel. It consists of a skull, a visor, a neck guard both encircled by a brass rim folded over the outer edge, a headband, two chinstraps, a crest, a mane made of black horsehair about 70 cm long, and a plume holder.
All fittings are in brass.
The skull is a single piece pressed. It is pierced inside with 4 suction holes for ventilation. Visor lined with green waxed leather. Neck guard with a lining of black waxed leather.
Front headband in brass embossed in relief with a sunburst in the center of which rests an imperial eagle (uncrowned) holding Jupiter's thunderbolt in its talons. In the lower part of the headband, a banner bears the inscription "GARDE DE PARIS".
Back headband in brass without decoration but framed by a relief fluted molding.
Crest composed of two fins embossed in relief with a decreasing sequence of eight oval-shaped drops, each separated by the same motif but smaller, with foliage and laurel leaves in the rear part; from the back of the fin returns, in the upper and lower parts, a water leaf letting escape at the top a twisted molding.
Each fin is attached to the skull by means of four steel screws; the mask embossed with a laurel branch pointing upwards and fixed at the bottom by a steel screw. The covering plate is undecorated steel.
Crest ornament composed of a brass olive embossed with foliage, a brass socket embossed with laurel leaves, and a scarlet horsehair plume.
The chinstraps are made of two chin pieces in strong cowhide covered with black waxed leather, each covered with an intertwined figure-eight chain. They are attached to the skull by means of a steel screw and a round brass rosette embossed with a sunburst.
Tubular brass plume holder slightly tapering towards the base.
Interior leather liner cut in wolf's teeth pattern. Complete but worn.
Very good condition, oxidation, and some signs of wear.
