TITLE: THE HISTORY OF THE FRENCH BAYONET THROUGH THE CENTURIES
This work aims to tell you the story of the "bayonet," from its appearance in the 16th century in the form of the "plug bayonet" to the present day. Around thirty period documents, over 300 photos of French bayonets as well as German, Italian, Danish, Japanese, and others, presented throughout the 128 pages of this work, bear witness to the evolution of this weapon, the "bayonet." It also draws a connection between the evolution of the bayonet and the royalties, empires, or governmental regimes in place at each period of our history. While our French sabers and sword-bayonets have sometimes been copied over the centuries by other countries, conversely, our bayonets from after the Second World War were inspired by American knife-bayonets. The bayonet sometimes became a tool for earthworks, bivouac, or even a survival weapon. Its shape and length have evolved throughout its history, but it is still present on the barrels of our rifles.
As a bayonet collector for many years and Honorary President of the AFCB (French Association of Bayonet Collectors, which includes many members both French and foreign), "The History of the French Bayonet Through the Centuries" is the second book written by Bernard Aubry. The previous one, written in collaboration with Claude Bera (published in French but also in English), dealt with the presentation of the different bayonets used by the numerous belligerents during the Great War of 1914-18. Various articles by this author regarding the presentation of French as well as foreign bayonets are also found in various specialized publications such as the Gazette des Armes, Armes et tir, and Militaria Magazine.
