OFFICER'S CUIRASSIER HELMET, MODEL 1872, MODIFIED 1874, THIRD REPUBLIC.

Helmet composed of: a skull; a visor; a neck guard; a copper band; two chin scales; a crest; a mane; a plume holder; a crest ornament and an interior lining.

Skull, chrome-plated metal, stamped with the balance, planed with a hammer. Perforated at the top with five suction holes.
Visor tilted at 53 degrees below a horizontal plane passing through the junction of the visor and the skull. Edged with a 17 mm wide gilded copper circle placed on top of its edges and fixed at the ends with a rivet. Underside of the visor lined with green leather.
Neck guard composed of: a circular band on its flat, welded under the posterior edge of the extended band, it has three gilded brass half-spherical-headed riveted nails inside; a second concave band, forming a gorge, with rounded angles and welded inside, at the bottom of the first band. Like the visor, the neck guard is edged with a 17 mm wide gilded copper setting, placed on top. Missing the leather lining the neck guard.

Copper-band, embossed with a flaming grenade surrounded by laurel leaves, adherent to the skull. Its base rests on the visor and its ends are riveted to the skull in the area hidden by the chin scale rosette.

Each chin scale is composed of 9 cut copper ornamental leaves, embossed in relief with laurel leaves, decreasing in width. These scales are fastened with flattened wire brads on a leather core lined with black velvet. Absence of the buckle. At the other end, black varnished calf skin attachment. Upper scale of each chin strap finished with a rounded part embossed with a circular rosette representing relief laurel leaves.

The skull is topped with a gilded copper crest consisting of two fins, a mask, and a cover.
The fins, placed vertically at a distance of 32 mm in front and 25 mm in the back, have the shape of a convex curvilinear triangle at the top and merge with the skull at their concave base forming a scalloped edge.
This edge is attached to the skull by round-headed drop tallow copper screws that are secured inside the helmet by square copper nuts.
The fins are decorated with palmettes and a border at their upper edge; the edge is decorated with water leaves, all embossed in relief.
A tin plate joins the upper edges of the fins and fixes their spacing.
The mask, serving as the anterior junction of the two fins by means of a solder, is embossed with a relief head of Medusa. The cover, also embossed, represents the continuation of the hair of the head of Medusa with intertwined snakes.
Crest ornament composed of a socket embossed with relief water leaves and a lens formed of two embossed shells. Fixed on the front of the crest and supporting a plume holder made of a tuft of black maned horsehair.

Black-dyed horsehair mane mounted on a strong nourished cowhide sole, in which the hair is assembled with tinned brass threads with a piece of leather glued with strong glue to the assembly; the space left empty between the two rows of hair is filled with a braid starting from the top and following the curve of the crest to its junction with the skull.
The mane is attached to the crest by a non-standard screw in the upper part, it is poorly fitted to the fins, as although old, it is not the original mane.

A stamped copper plume holder, height 35 mm, forming a socket with square sections, fixed obliquely.

Interior lining in polished brown leather, cut with ten wolf teeth, each fitted with a metal eyelet.

Very good condition, gilding of the brass parts missing, period mane but changed.
