Sold out
SWORD OF THE NAVAL MILITIAMEN OF THE IMPERIAL GUARD "GARDE MARINE," FIRST EMPIRE (1804-1815).

A sword entirely made of brass with a leather scabbard, whose design was created in 1804 by the swordsmith DUC.

Guard with a single hollow branch (height 11.7 cm without the quillon, width 1.8 cm at the top, thickness 0.9 cm at the top and 1.2 cm at the bottom), outer ear in the shape of shields (height 5.5 cm, width 4.4 cm, thickness approximately 2/3 mm) engraved with an anchor (height 4.75 cm, width 2.9 cm), the guard branch ends with a ball quillon (height 4.6 cm, width 4.3 cm, thickness 1.8 to 0.8 cm, diameter approximately 1.6 cm). The crossguard is hollow underneath. Cap with a short tang (height 8.9 cm, width 3.9 cm max), thickness 3.4 cm max.
Wooden handle (length 4 cm, thickness 2.3 cm), covered with leather, wrapped in a straight brass wire (approximately 2 mm). "DUC" maker's mark struck on the quillon.

Klingenthal blade, 70.3 cm long, 4.35 cm at the heel, and 7 cm at the tip, with a thick spine to the heel of approximately 1 cm, with a tapered point. The hollow ground edges are engraved on each side with "GARDE IMPÉRIALE" in large cursive letters (height about 2 cm, width 9.5 cm) within a roped cartouche, anchor, and palmettes (outer width 22.5 cm, outer length 2.8 cm).

Length of the weapon alone 83.2 cm, weight 0.953 kilograms.

Scabbard in wood covered with black waxed leather (length at the top 5.2 cm, thickness at the top 1.8 cm), brass fittings: chape (outer height 11.6 cm and inner 9.6 cm, width 5 cm, thickness 1.9 cm), central ring (outer height 8.6 cm and inner 4.2 cm, length 5.3 cm, thickness 2 cm), drag (brass, height 10.5 cm, thickness 0.4 cm), brass rings. Brass ring fastening studs (height 1.3 cm, width 1.3 cm), brass rings (outer diameter 3.2 cm, thickness 0.4 cm).

Markings on the leather scabbard with a naval anchor symbol, under the drag, as illustrated in our latest photograph. Scabbard length alone 71.5 cm, weight 0.560 kilograms.

Very good state of preservation. Usage oxidation on the blade that has never been cleaned. Some signs of use on the drag and other scabbard fittings, the pin of the central ring of the scabbard is in brass slightly more pink, which probably indicates an almost invisible period repair, as was very common within the military units, original drag loop but slightly protruding. Scabbard is in very good condition with a very high-quality leather, some slight chipping and minimal loss on the leather crust, some damaged stitches, but this is already exceptionally minimal for this model.
