Helmet and breastplate set of Cuirassiers from the Imperial Guard, model 1854, Second Empire.
HELMET with a steel shell, visor, and neck guard with brass trimmings. Front band embossed in high relief with a crowned N resting on two laurel branches. Crest composed of: two flaps embossed with a series of diminishing panels towards the back and bordered at the top with laurel leaves; and an embossed mask at the top depicting the head of Medusa. Ornamental crest in brass adorned with scarlet horsehair. Black horsehair mane with a braided plait in the center. Chin strap with interlaced rings and rosettes embossed with laurel leaves. Interior leather lining. Good condition. Normal oxidation on the shell, dated 1856 and 1859.
BREASTPLATE made of steel consisting of a backplate and a front plate both inscribed with the numbers 1407 along the outer edges. Front plate bordered with 21 brass nails, with a hook for the aiguillette and a button for the cartridge box, and marked inside with "Manufacture Impériale Klingenthal Coulaux & Cpie 1856 - 1st size 1st width".
Backplate bordered with 39 brass nails, adorned at the top with two leather straps covered with an intertwined figure-8 chainmail in brass with a steel lock, and at the bottom with a black leather belt (later addition). Backplate marked "Manufacture Impériale Klingenthal Coulaux & Cpie 1856 - 1st size 1st width".
Good condition. Normal oxidation.
