Le Magasin pittoresque was a French magazine published from January 1833 to 1938.

Originally published as an eight-page booklet, illustrated with engravings, and sold for two sous, a new issue would be released eight days after the previous one, followed by another, and so on, every week for eighteen years, until the stamp duty law of July 16, 1850. As this law placed a heavy burden on publications priced at 10 centimes, Le Magasin pittoresque became monthly at that time, and later began publishing twice a month.
Le Magasin pittoresque was a sort of popular encyclopedia that, while not neglecting important modern discoveries, focused primarily on bringing the past back to life. The designation "Magasin" was intended to indicate that the collection contained a bit of everything: morality, history, archaeology, art, natural sciences, industry, travel, all subjects that would appeal to the heart, imagination, and taste, enriching with pure and instructive distractions the leisure time of home and family life.
Édouard Charton, inspired by English magazines, conceived the idea, outlined the plan, recruited the writers, most of whom belonged to prestigious schools, and even oversaw the material execution of Le Magasin pittoresque.

The success of Le Magasin pittoresque was as rapid as it was complete. By the second year, it counted up to 100,000 buyers, and the collection became widely appreciated. Through their selflessness, the original collaborators significantly contributed to the success of the publication. From the start, it was agreed among them that, in order to ensure its moral unity and give full freedom to the editorial team, none of the articles would be signed. Nevertheless, it is known that George Sand sometimes contributed to the magazine, and that Camille Flammarion made his debut as a popularizer there in 1864, at the age of 22.
